Issa Rae, “Screen Time”

What They Did
27 episodes, approximately one minute each. A double-date movie night derailed by a TV hack (characters must expose their secrets or face exposure). Structured explicitly as Act 1 and Act 2. Built in partnership with TikTok, not pitched to Netflix. Issa Rae's return to digital storytelling 15 years after launching on YouTube.

Why It Worked
75 million views in week one. 22 million on episode one. TikTok's highest-ever seven-day watch time for any series. But the number is not the point. Issa Rae created one of the defining prestige television series of the decade in Insecure. She chose TikTok over Netflix for her next project.

The Key Building Block
Withdrawal Mechanic | The secret exposure premise is thriller dependency made visible. every episode ends with a secret half-revealed, a character mid-jeopardy. the tension is psychological, and 27 episodes of escalating jeopardy meant that by the finale, leaving felt like abandoning someone you knew.
